DEAR FRIENDS,

YOU DID IT!
BAY LIST
Thanks to our loyal readers and fans, the Balboa was named #1 Indie Theatre on SFGate's BAY LIST. Thanks for your support and do scroll down to read the wonderful things people have written about the Balboa and especially our amazing staff.

CONTROVERSY
My comments the past two weeks have stirred some controversy among people in the film business and alerted our audiences to some of the realities of trying to keep an independent theater open.

If you did not read about the difficulties of booking good movies and why we are not showing 3D movies please take a few minutes. We'd love your comments.

EAT POPCORN
YOU WILL READ THIS ARTICLE
Have you ever heard about subliminal advertising? Supposedly the names of soft drinks were flashed on the movie screen for only a second, but several times in some theaters in the 1950s. The idea was power of suggestion would send audiences running out to the snack bar thirsty for a drink. If only we could get the internet companies to do that instead of blocking our view with huge ads we resent all the more because they pop up on our screens. Does anybody think we really rememeber the product?

This article, courtesy of Richard Peterson of the Smith Rafael Film Center, is hilarious. Enjoy.

COMING UP

We have some terrific films yet to come this summer. Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION, the highly anticipated thriller following his five hits in a row: MEMENTO, INSOMNIA, BATMAN BEGINS,THE PRESTIGE and THE DARK KNIGHT. It opens July 16. Check the trailer and you'll be intrigued we are sure.

GET LOW
Robert Duvall and Bill Murray are great in the off-beat comedy GET LOW set for August 6.

EAT PRAY LOVE
August 13 brings the film adaptation of the best-selling novel EAT PRAY LOVE starring Julia Roberts.

We've got some more surprises but that is enough for now.

About This Week's Movies

GROWN UPS

GROWN UPSRated PG-13 for crude material including suggestive references, language and some male rear nudity. 1 hour 42 minutes.

Grown Ups, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade, is a comedy about five friends and former teammates who reunite years later to honor the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives (Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph) and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier. Picking up where they left off, they discover why growing older doesn’t mean growing up.

TOY STORY 3

TOY STORY 3Rated G. 1 hour 43 minutes, plus 6 minute short film.

Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it's all for one and one for all as they join Barbie's counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear to plan their great escape.

"Toy Story 3 pays attention to the reasons we return again and again to the motion picture experience."
- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"Woody, Buzz and playmates make a thoroughly engaging, emotionally satisfying return."
- Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

"Adults in the audience will undoubtedly shed a tear or two. But that's how good the folks at Pixar are: They make you feel genuine emotions for hunks of plastic."
- Christy Lemire, Associated Press

"Once it kicks in to unexpectedly become a prison-break thriller, it fires on all cylinders all the way to the finish line."
- Todd McCarthy, IndieWIRE

"TS3, like its predecessors, is a clever, engrossing adventure, and, like any sequel, it tries to balance continuity with novelty, the latter provided by a cadre of shiny new characters."
- Eric Hynes, Village Voice

"On a scale of one to ten, Toy Story 3 goes to infinity, and beyond."
- Scott A. Mantz, Access Hollywood

NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANTS

One of the strengths of the Balboa is our neighborhood. Other than the bank, all the businesses are family owned and operated. The restaurants are especially wonderful. On the outer Balboa strip there are 24 eating establishments by my count. You can eat Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, American, Mexican, Seafood and Vietnamese cuisines. The foods are fresh, distinctive and all reasonably priced. The media food critics have only discovered a few of them but the locals know a good thing. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at one of these fine eateries while visiting the Balboa. All are within easy walking distance. And please send us reviews and recommendations we can share with our other guests. Send reviews to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)

We love it when you send us a review of a neighborhood restaurant you've enjoyed. We encourage you all to write about your culinary adventures in the Outer Richmond. Check out the Menu Book in our lobby and our COMPLETE RESTAURANT LIST.
