PIXAR ANIMATOR IN PERSON

Teddy Newton is the Director of DAY & NIGHT, the fantastic short that plays before TOY STORY 3. He's also the voice of the Chatter Telephone in TOY STORY 3. He will be at the Balboa in person to do a Q&A and give away signed prizes after our 7:00 show on Friday July 2, and to introduce the 9:15 show!
Teddy Newton came to Pixar in July of 2000 to work on Pixar’s sixth feature film, THE INCREDIBLES and has since contributed his considerable character design skills to many of Disney•Pixar’s award-winning feature and short films, including RATATOUILLE, YOUR FRIEND THE RAT and PRESTO. He was also instrumental in the creation of the "End Titles" of THE INCREDIBLES and RATATOUILLE and is frequently cast as a voice in Disney•Pixar films.
Prior to coming to Pixar, Newton worked in the story department and in character design at Warner Bros. on IRON GIANT. He also served as writer/producer for the independent feature film THE TROUBLE WITH LOU.
Newton is inspired by the drawings of Al Hirschfeld and early Warner Bros animation. He grew up in Dana Point, California, and attended California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts).

We have been so pleased with the reaction from our audiences at seeing TOY STORY 3 at the Balboa. A customer forwarded this article about 3-D glasses for those still trying to make a decision.
Our friend Robert Bloomberg is presenting an amazing program of 3D slides at the Marin County Fair this weekend and promises the glasses will be clean and new.
This is our favorite fair because all attractions from concerts to rides are included in the admission price.
The rest of the summer is looking terrific at the Balboa. We are especially excited about INCEPTION from director Chris Nolan (MEMENTO, INSOMNIA, BATMAN BEGINS, THE PRESTIGE, DARK KNIGHT). Peter Travers wrote the first review. His rave is not online but in the current issue of ROLLING STONE that has been so controversial with the Gen. McChrystal article and Lady Gaga on the cover.
It opens July 16.
ONLY AT THE BALBOA
As you know, the Balboa has the lowest prices in town. But that is not all. We have FREE GROWN UPS and TOY STORY 3 goodies for everyone (while supplies last). T-shirts, yo-yos, and inner tubes!
We will also be giving away tickets at select weekend shows for the original KING KONG, screening at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland on July 9.
WIN VERY SPECIAL TOY STORY PRIZES
When you visit the Balboa, remember to enter our sweepstakes. You might win one of the copies of THE ART OF TOY STORY 3, a beautiful $40 book from Chronicle Books, or a poster signed by the film’s animators.

We love all the comments on the list too.

The readers of San Francisco Magazine also love us. We came in number 2 and can’t complain about the company.
Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Grown Ups, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade, is a comedy about five friends and former teammates who reunite years later to honor the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives (Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph) and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier. Picking up where they left off, they discover why growing older doesn’t mean growing up. "While the plot is sparse, Sandler and his crew produce enough laughs and memorable moments to keep the audience thoroughly entertained." "No one in their right mind goes to an Adam Sandler movie for any reason other than to laugh, and Grown Ups delivers." Read interview with star Adam Sandler. Read interview with star Salma Hayek. Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it's all for one and one for all as they join Barbie's counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear to plan their great escape. "Toy Story 3 pays attention to the reasons we return again and again to the motion picture experience." "Woody, Buzz and playmates make a thoroughly engaging, emotionally satisfying return." "Adults in the audience will undoubtedly shed a tear or two. But that's how good the folks at Pixar are: They make you feel genuine emotions for hunks of plastic." "Once it kicks in to unexpectedly become a prison-break thriller, it fires on all cylinders all the way to the finish line." "TS3, like its predecessors, is a clever, engrossing adventure, and, like any sequel, it tries to balance continuity with novelty, the latter provided by a cadre of shiny new characters." "On a scale of one to ten, Toy Story 3 goes to infinity, and beyond." |

One of the strengths of the Balboa is our neighborhood. Other than the bank, all the businesses are family owned and operated. The restaurants are especially wonderful. On the outer Balboa strip there are 24 eating establishments by my count. You can eat Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, American, Mexican, Seafood and Vietnamese cuisines. The foods are fresh, distinctive and all reasonably priced. The media food critics have only discovered a few of them but the locals know a good thing. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at one of these fine eateries while visiting the Balboa. All are within easy walking distance. And please send us reviews and recommendations we can share with our other guests. Send reviews to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)
We love it when you send us a review of a neighborhood restaurant you've enjoyed. We encourage you all to write about your culinary adventures in the Outer Richmond. Check out the Menu Book in our lobby and our COMPLETE RESTAURANT LIST.
