Teddy Newton, director of the Pixar short DAY AND NIGHT came to the Balboa last Friday night for a very special evening. He answered many questions, gave away prizes and signed posters. We thank Pixar for arranging this unique only-at-the-Balboa event.
The best way to learn about these special events is to read your weekly newsletter.
We are excited to be opening CYRUS starring Marisa Tomei, John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill. I first saw it at the Sundance Film Festival where I knew it should be a hit. This is a quirky film, not everybody’s cup of tea but certainly hilarious and provocative for adventurous adult audiences. The word-of-mouth is making this another hit for savvy distributor Fox Searchlight.
Can you imagine that this one company has successfully released LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, JUNO, LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, CRAZY HEART, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, SIDEWAYS, FANTASTIC MR. FOX, THE WRESTLER, YOUNG@HEART, THE SAVAGES, ONCE, WAITRESS, THE NAMESAKE, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, MILLIONS, GARDEN STATE, KINSEY, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, ONE HOUR PHOTO, IN AMERICA, L’AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, 28 DAYS LATER, WAKING LIFE, KISSING JESSICA STEIN, SEXY BEAST, BOYS DON’T CRY, ANTWONE FISHER, SUPER TROOPERS, QUILLS, THE DEEP END, THE ICE STORM and THE FULL MONTY? They have good taste and marketing smarts that benefit both audiences and theaters looking for quality movies.
CYRUS PRIZES
We will have some posters to giveaway at evening shows of CYRUS this weekend and you can enter our lobby drawing to win a very special, limited edition tee shirt (adults only please).
TOY STORY 3 continues for one final week. And next Friday, July 16, we open the most highly anticipated movie of the summer, INCEPTION. The early reviews are all raves and promise a truly unique movie from the creator of MEMENTO, BATMAN BEGINS, THE PRESTIGE, INSOMNIA and DARK KNIGHT.
Maybe it is best that you don’t read any reviews in advance... trust us. Todd Gilchrist of Cinematical wrote: "As much as I want to describe in meticulous detail the ways upon ways that I loved Christopher Nolan's Inception, there's a part of me that almost wants you to not read this until you've seen the film itself. Not unlike Warner Brothers' marketing campaign has suggested, it's a film that benefits from knowing as little as possible about it before seeing it, because its individual twists and turns are almost as exciting to discover as their cumulative visceral, intellectual and emotional impact. ...Inception is a stunning achievement and the most completely entertaining film I've seen in years."
All of this entertainment for the lowest prices in town. Spread the word.
WIN VERY SPECIAL TOY STORY PRIZES
When you visit the Balboa, remember to enter our sweepstakes. You might win one of the copies of THE ART OF TOY STORY 3, a beautiful $40 book from Chronicle Books, or a poster signed by the film’s animators.

AND SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE
The readers of San Francisco Magazine also love us. We came in number 2 and can’t complain about the company.

With John's social life at a standstill and his ex-wife about to get remarried, a down on his luck divorcée finally meets the woman of his dreams, only to discover she has another man in her life - her son. Still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John has all but given up on romance. But at the urging of his ex-wife and best friend Jamie, John grudgingly agrees to join her and her fiancé Tim at a party. To his and everyone else's surprise, he actually manages to meet someone: the gorgeous and spirited Molly. Their chemistry is immediate. The relationship takes off quickly but Molly is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond John's house. Perplexed, he follows her home and discovers the other man in Molly's life: her son, Cyrus. A 21-year-old new age musician, Cyrus is his mom's best friend and shares an unconventional relationship with her. Cyrus will go to any lengths to protect Molly and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone, especially John. Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love-and it appears only one man can be left standing when it's over. "Instead of just offering slices of life, which might be interesting enough, they are devising real stories and placing vivid characters in collision." "The movie doesn’t eagerly jump from one payoff to another, but attunes itself to nuance, body language and the habitual politeness with which we try to overlook social embarrassment." "Delightfully demented and unique." "A comedy of discomfort that walks a wonderful line between reality-based emotional honesty and engaging humor, it demonstrates the good things that happen when quirky independent style combines with top-of-the-line acting skill." "Above all, it deftly captures the ambiguity and absurdity of human relationships. With improvised dialogue and performances that go from uncomfortable to honest, Cyrus is an off-kilter charmer." Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it's all for one and one for all as they join Barbie's counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear to plan their great escape. "Toy Story 3 pays attention to the reasons we return again and again to the motion picture experience." "Woody, Buzz and playmates make a thoroughly engaging, emotionally satisfying return." "Adults in the audience will undoubtedly shed a tear or two. But that's how good the folks at Pixar are: They make you feel genuine emotions for hunks of plastic." "Once it kicks in to unexpectedly become a prison-break thriller, it fires on all cylinders all the way to the finish line." "TS3, like its predecessors, is a clever, engrossing adventure, and, like any sequel, it tries to balance continuity with novelty, the latter provided by a cadre of shiny new characters." "On a scale of one to ten, Toy Story 3 goes to infinity, and beyond." |

COMEDY FESTIVAL OPENS THURSDAY AT THE VOGUE THEATRE: PREMIERE OF LOL-SF!
San Francisco is lucky to have film festivals celebrating all types of films, from all over the world. Comedies, however, are largely ignored. LOL-SF seeks to change that as it celebrates 16 classic, contemporary and independent comedies. The Festival opens Thursday at the Vogue with the German comedy gem SOUL KITCHEN. Please check out the LOL-SF schedule and make plans to laugh out loud at the Vogue. Advance tickets are on-sale now and a $50 festival pass is also available at www.lolsf.org!
Read about LOL-SF in the S.F. Chronicle and in the Examiner.
We are blessed in the Bay Area to have a handful of true movie palaces still showing great movies...the Castro, Stanford and our favorite, The Paramount in Oakland. The theater is once again hosting a selection of great classics with cartoons, prizes and tremendous fun.
KING KONG (1933) - One of the finest adventure movies ever made and the true prototype for all monster movies to follow. More than three quarters of a century after its release, the original King Kong is one of those rare, great films that stands up to endless repeated viewings, each time revealing something new. "Scream Queen" Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong star in this RKO Radio Pictures classic, but it is Kong who steals the show. Brought to life on the silver screen by Willis O'Brien's pioneering stop-action animation, the monstrous gorilla rips apart dinosaurs on Skull Island, wreaks havoc in Manhattan, and bats bi-planes out of the sky above the Empire State Building. But, despite his rampages, is Kong just a destructive beast? Or is Kong a creature that, in his own way, just wants to do the right thing? |

One of the strengths of the Balboa is our neighborhood. Other than the bank, all the businesses are family owned and operated. The restaurants are especially wonderful. On the outer Balboa strip there are 24 eating establishments by my count. You can eat Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, American, Mexican, Seafood and Vietnamese cuisines. The foods are fresh, distinctive and all reasonably priced. The media food critics have only discovered a few of them but the locals know a good thing. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at one of these fine eateries while visiting the Balboa. All are within easy walking distance. And please send us reviews and recommendations we can share with our other guests. Send reviews to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)
We love it when you send us a review of a neighborhood restaurant you've enjoyed. We encourage you all to write about your culinary adventures in the Outer Richmond. Check out the Menu Book in our lobby and our COMPLETE RESTAURANT LIST.
