This is your last chance to see INCEPTION at the Balboa and get free goodies. We also have a special one week engagement of the new Joan Rivers documentary. This is a result of popular request. We do listen to you.
Next week we look forward to opening the new film adaptation of the popular book EAT PRAY LOVE starring Julia Roberts as she travels to Italy, India and Bali. We are looking forward to taking this trip with you. There will be goodies too.
In our other theater will be the Exclusive San Francisco Premiere of the brilliant satire PEEPLI LIVE. Next week I’ll tell you how I came to discover this knockout film that was the first Indian movie to be invited to Sundance where Screen magazine wrote: "In her debut feature, Anusha Rizvi entertains with a bawdy take on the rural class struggle as she examines a serious injustice in India today. Her comedy is as wildly funny as it is outrageous."
And Variety reported: "A peppy screwball comedy with elements of social satire, PEEPLI LIVE suggests a rural Indian take on Billy Wilder's ACE IN THE HOLE. A big carnival of media and politics swirls around farmer Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri) when he announces plans to kill himself, the poor man hoping his surviving family members will collect compensation as part of the government's "suicide program." But Natha, natch, is in no hurry to fulfill his part of the bargain. Whether or not India's first-ever Sundance entry can capitalize on the international success of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, it deserves a long life in distribution." Read more here.

Also next week marks the return of the hugely popular REMEMBERING PLAYLAND, showing every day at 12:30pm starting Friday, August 13. An exhibit of great photos of Playland will also be featured in our lobby.
Sincerely,
Gary

The readers of San Francisco Magazine also love us. We came in number 2 and can’t complain about the company.

In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a single idea within one's mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset. "As much as I want to describe in meticulous detail the ways upon ways that I loved Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION, there's a part of me that almost wants you to not read this until you've seen the film itself. Not unlike Warner Brothers' marketing campaign has suggested, it's a film that benefits from knowing as little as possible about it before seeing it, because its individual twists and turns are almost as exciting to discover as their cumulative visceral, intellectual and emotional impact. Inception is a stunning achievement and the most completely entertaining film I've seen in years." "In this wildly ingenious chess game, grandmaster Nolan plants ideas in our heads that disturb and dazzle. The result is a knockout." "A fiendishly enjoyable sci-fi voyage across a dreamscape that is thoroughly compelling." "One of the year's best films, one that will surely get even better upon repeated viewings." "If movies are shared dreams, then Christopher Nolan is surely one of Hollywood's most inventive dreamers, given the evidence of his commandingly clever Inception." "The movie of the SUMMER. The movie of the YEAR." "Pure cinema at its best feels like dreaming with your eyes wide open." |
Joan Rivers launched her career as a standup comic in the early '60s, a time when female comedians were few and far between, and after several years of working nightclubs to unresponsive audiences, she was booked on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1965 and soon became one of the most successful comedy acts in the nation. Since then, Rivers has hosted several TV talk shows, written best-selling books, directed a feature film, launched a line of jewelry, and kept up a busy schedule of personal appearances, determined to hold on to her stardom regardless of the fickle winds of show business. Filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg followed Rivers through a typically eventful year in her life, and in Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, they offer a look at the woman behind the laughter as she struggles to stay in the spotlight, works on new material, launches a one-woman show in the United Kingdom that doesn't fare as well as she hopes, takes a chance as a participant on a reality TV show, and ponders her career in show business at the age of 75.
"This convulsively funny movie takes an up-close and sometimes queasy-personal approach to its motormouth subject, who, when she’s not making you howl with laughter (or freeze up in horror), brandishes her deeply held hurts, fears, prejudices, poor judgment and bad taste as if they were stigmata." "A Piece Of Work is funny, heartbreaking, and casually profound about the insatiable need for validation and approval that fuels so much stand-up comedy." "She remains one of the funniest, dirtiest, most daring and transgressive of stand-up comics, and she hasn't missed a beat." "Co-directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg observe a year in the life of a woman who trailblazed for today's female comics and remains as driven, hard-working and career-focused as ever." "She is by turns blue, bitter, hilarious, unbroken; a Hollywood-style portrait in infinite ambition. In that role, Rivers is unforgettable." |
We are blessed in the Bay Area to have a handful of true movie palaces still showing great movies...the Castro, Stanford and our favorite, The Paramount in Oakland. The theater is once again hosting a selection of great classics with cartoons, prizes and tremendous fun.
Directed by Howard Hawks, this was the first film featuring the on-screen pairing of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and marked Bacall's screen debut. William Faulkner loosely adapted Ernest Hemingway's novel for this thrilling tale of a down-on-his-luck American ship captain in Martinique who reluctantly smuggles French resistance fighters through a net of Vichy police and Gestapo agents. The remarkable chemistry between Bogart and Bacall is breathtaking and their romantic banter throughout the film remains the stuff of Hollywood legend. |

One of the strengths of the Balboa is our neighborhood. Other than the bank, all the businesses are family owned and operated. The restaurants are especially wonderful. On the outer Balboa strip there are 24 eating establishments by my count. You can eat Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, American, Mexican, Seafood and Vietnamese cuisines. The foods are fresh, distinctive and all reasonably priced. The media food critics have only discovered a few of them but the locals know a good thing. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at one of these fine eateries while visiting the Balboa. All are within easy walking distance. And please send us reviews and recommendations we can share with our other guests. Send reviews to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)
We love it when you send us a review of a neighborhood restaurant you've enjoyed. We encourage you all to write about your culinary adventures in the Outer Richmond. Check out the Menu Book in our lobby and our COMPLETE RESTAURANT LIST.
